MP: Relations between Belarus, Cuba are reaching new level

MINSK, 22 November (BelTA) - Relations between Belarus and Cuba are reaching a new level, Sergei Klishevich, a member of the House of Representatives, told reporters following a meeting between Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cuba to Belarus Santiago Perez Benitez in Minsk on 22 November, BelTA has learned.

“At this historical stage our relations with Cuba are reaching a new level. We see how our contacts have intensified in various areas, ranging from medicine to industry, agriculture and the IT sector. Of course, these relations need a certain political support which has been continuously growing in Belarus," Sergei Klishevich said. “Belarus constantly expresses support in international organizations to the people of Cuba in connection with the constant attacks by the United States. The Cuban people know what is happening in Belarus and support our state, our domestic and foreign policy on virtually all issues. Today there are no topics that would, let's say, cause disagreements or some disputes, discussions. We are in solidarity on these issues."

According to the MP, it is important for the countries to maintain such a high level of political contacts. “We have a very active friendship group with the Cuban Parliament. We regularly discuss a variety of areas: from the real economy to political issues, and make relevant decisions. Today's meeting with the chairman of our Parliament is another step to strengthen such political contacts, which, naturally, will be an impetus for the development of all other sectors of our cooperation,” the MP stressed.

“One of the areas of our cooperation is medical sector and pharmaceutical technology. We know that Cuba is well-developed in this field, and cooperate with our organizations and with the Healthcare Ministry of Belarus today. The Cuban vaccine against COVID-19 is considered one of the best in the world, and today Belarusians have an opportunity to use it for vaccination, too. We are working on the issue of production of medications against cancer. We know that there are serious developments in Cuba and they are making progress in this issue,” added Sergei Klishevich.

The parties discussed the interaction between the legislative bodies of the countries, including through friendship groups, the Belarusian-Cuban cooperation in trade, economy and humanitarian affairs, and also the upcoming visit of Juan Esteban Lazo Hernandez, President of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba to Belarus.
