MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – Belarus and China are interested in closer inter-parliamentary cooperation, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Sivets told reporters, BelTA has learned.

Chair of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Xie Xiaoyong on 16 May.

“Today’s meeting focused on parliamentary contacts and touched upon other areas of bilateral cooperation,” said Sergei Sivets. “Emphasis was placed on inter-parliamentary cooperation, including in the regional dimension, since the Council of the Republic is a body of territorial representation and we see this function as one of the most relevant and promising.”

“Moreover, a high-level committee is currently being put together in line with the agreement between the parliaments. It will work to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two states,” added the parliamentarian.
