MP: Belarus and Russia stand ready to counteract attempts to depreciate common values

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia confirm their resolve to inflexibly counteract any attempts to depreciate values of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko made the relevant statement during the 58th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia on 7 July, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Andreichenko noted that events dedicated to the great deed of heroic forefathers occupy a special place on the Union State agenda this year. “For Belarusians and Russians the deed embodies the supreme values that compose the core of the people's character and the basis of national statehood. The organization of parades in Minsk and Moscow, the opening of the Rzhev war memorial, and festivities to commemorate Belarus' liberation from the Nazi have confirmed the resolve of our countries to defend peace, freedom and security, to inflexibly counteract any attempts to depreciate the values that cement our union,” the head of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament stressed.

Vladimir Andreichenko stressed that as a rule the scale and cynicism of these information attacks skyrocket in anticipation of election campaigns. “The presidential election in Belarus and the voting to amend the Russian Constitution are not an exception in this regard. It is the duty of parliamentarians to demonstrate their decisive stance in protecting the society against information pressure and various kinds of speculations about Union State affairs,” the MP is convinced.

A balanced mass media policy plays an important role in these efforts. “We should persistently try to fix disproportions in the coverage of Union State affairs in national mass media. Close attention should be paid to the objectivity of the materials that reflect vital interests of Belarusians and Russians,” Vladimir Andreichenko believes.

The 58th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia was held as a videoconference. The fulfillment of the Union State action plan on celebrating the 75th anniversary of Belarus' liberation from the Nazi invaders and the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 was one of the key items on the agenda. The MPs decided to continue working to immortalize the deed of the Soviet nation during the Great Patriotic War, counteract the falsification of history and preserve historical memory. Work aimed at the patriotic upbringing of young people and care for veterans will be continued. Apart from that, efforts to establish a permanent and equal dialogue with parliamentarians of other countries for the sake of ensuring peace for present generations and future ones will be stepped up.

The next session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia will take place in Russia. The Council of the Parliamentary Assembly will have to determine where and when it will take place.
