Mirziyoyev: Uzbekistan strongly supports Belarus’ speedy accession to SCO

TASHKENT, 8 February (BelTA) – Uzbekistan strongly supports the speedy accession of Belarus to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a full member, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said following the talks with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, BelTA has learned.

"We agreed to continue to maintain active contacts. We will deepen our dialogue within the framework of regional and international organizations. UN, CIS, SCO. In this regard, Uzbekistan firmly supports the speedy accession of the Republic of Belarus to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a full member," the president of Uzbekistan said.

As BelTA reported earlier, Belarus has ratified the memorandum of the country’s commitment to obtain the status of a member state in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and joined a number of international treaties within the framework of the SCO.

At a press conference in Minsk in mid-December 2023, Kazakhstan Ambassador to Belarus Yerlan Baizhanov said that Belarus could become a full member of the SCO in July 2024 at a summit in Kazakhstan. "Kazakhstan has expressed political support for Belarus' accession to the SCO," the diplomat said. “As far as I understand, Belarus will not have any problems with accession. Kazakhstan now chairs the SCO and the next summit will be held in Astana."
