MFA: EU's economic sanctions are a new futile attempt to gradually strangle Belarus

MINSK, 25 June (BelTA) – The European Union's economic sanctions are a new futile attempt to gradually strangle Belarus, reads a statement of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on its website, BelTA has learned.

“After the treacherous joint attack on 22 June 2021 by the axis of the EU, the USA, the UK and Canada on Belarus, on our enterprises, businessmen, journalists, and MPs only for the fact that they express their own opinion, it became quite clear that a new futile attempt will be made to gradually strangle our citizens. Allegedly advocating for the freedom of expression, the European Union is rooting out mercilessly everything that does not fit into the Eurocentric picture of the world. Perhaps this is the essence of their democracy,” the ministry said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Western countries are no longer even trying to justify or pretend to justify their sanctions citing some international legal grounds and provide some explanations. “Because there are not any. The only goal is to disorganize and undermine a sovereign and independent state that pursues an independent foreign and domestic policy based on the true interests of the Belarusian people. Decisions were taken hastily and without good reason. The EU countries did not even consider it necessary to wait for at least the ICAO findings,” the ministry stressed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs finds it obvious that the huge European Union seeks to satisfy its ambitions at the expense of a relatively small Belarus and is not interested in the opinion of millions of Belarusian workers, trade unions, political parties and public associations, who have rejected strongly the infamous EU sanctions policy.

The EU leaders do not want to hear these voices, like they do not want to hear the voices of their own citizens and business, some of whom are already on the verge of bankruptcy because of such policies. “It is no coincidence that the reputable EuroTrack public opinion surveys by the British YouGov company show the catastrophically low ratings of confidence in governments in a number of EU countries, including 31% in Germany, 23% in France, 30% in Sweden. The politicians who do not have the support of even their own people are trying to teach and attack Belarus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
