Makei, Borrell discuss situation on border over phone

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) - Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei held a telephone conversation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell on 16 November, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties discussed the situation at the Belarus-EU border.

Vladimir Makei briefed Josep Borrell on measures to tighten the migration regime in Belarus. “He emphasized Belarus' efforts to provide humanitarian aid to migrants, including in cooperation with public and international organizations such as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organization for Migration, the International Children's Fund, the Belarusian Red Cross and Crescent Society, and others,” the ministry said.

The minister of foreign affairs reiterated Belarus' focus on the joint search for solutions to existing problems, including the early resolution of the migration crisis.

He emphasized Belarus' principled position against sanctions being used as a policy tool in respect to a sovereign and independent state, and also their negative consequences for both the bilateral relations and the regional stability and security in general.

The parties agreed to continue contacts between Belarus and the EU.
