Makei: Actions of countries of the European Union undermine Belarus' sovereignty and independence

MINSK, 18 September (BelTA) – Actions of countries of the European Union undermine the sovereignty and independence of Belarus despite statements about support for Belarus' sovereignty and independence. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement as part of a recording of his speech ahead of the general debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei said: “We are surprised by simply destructive political statements, primarily those of our neighbors and other European Union countries, about Belarus. It is a paradox: they say they are ready and will support Belarus' sovereignty and independence, yet their actions undermine the sovereignty and independence.”

The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs is convinced that further development of the situation will not end well. He noted that in the next few days the ministers of foreign affairs of the European Union member states will discuss the matter of sanctions against Belarus and members of its government. “We are ready for it. We will never initiate any actions meant to worsen relations with our important partner – the European Union – and individual member states. We are definitely ready to give an adequate answer to such destructive actions. Sanctions will not produce anything good. We've already had a chance to talk about the matter. Belarus' history and the history of other countries testify to it. Sanctions are not the tool to achieve success in interstate relations. Exactly the opposite. Naturally we will be forced to give an adequate answer to the European Union's decision,” Vladimir Makei stressed.
