Main directions of Belarus' Constitution update mentioned

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – After delivering the final part of the Constitutional Court's message to the head of state and the chambers of the parliament Chairman of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich talked to reporters and mentioned the main directions of the future update of the Constitution, BelTA has learned.

Piotr Miklashevich said: “The Constitution is a special social contract that describes the structure of the society and the state, the system of government, rights and freedoms of citizens, interaction between the individual, the society, and the state. At present taking into account results of the 6th Belarusian People's Congress one can single out some directions of the possible update of our country's fundamental law.”

He said: “First, the status of the Belarusian People's Congress will be redefined at the constitutional level as the supreme representative body of democracy with certain powers. Second, the authority, functions, and the constitutional responsibility, self-dependence and interaction of supreme government agencies will be clarified. Third, constitutional foundations of the election system and party construction will be developed. Fourth, constitutional principles for a modern social state and new guarantees of social and economic rights for citizens will be determined.”

Piotr Miklashevich described the formation of the public legal awareness and respect for the fundamental law of the country, for the values the Constitution stipulates as the most important task for the near future. “Naturally the execution of the laws that build up on provisions of the Constitution, that rely on constitutional norms and principles represents the foundation for achieving the consolidation and unity of the society, stable and dynamic development of Belarus,” the judge is convinced.
