Lukashenko to make report on Victory’s 80thanniversary at CIS summit

MOSCOW, 7 October (BelTA) - Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is set to make a report at the CIS summit in Moscow on 8 October to highlight the adoption of the address to the peoples of the CIS member states and the world community in connection with the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told the media on 7 October, BelTA has learned.

“The main event in the CIS under Tajikistan’s presidency next year will be the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Tomorrow the first issue at the CIS Heads of State Council meeting will be the discussion of the address in connection with this date. Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko will make a report on the matter. Such a decision was taken due to the fact that Belarus is one of the republics of the former USSR that suffered the most during the Great Patriotic War,” Sergei Lebedev said.

In his words, the address is aimed at preserving the memory of the war and the feat of the peoples of the USSR in the Great Victory. It also states the need to take joint steps to counter the glorification of Nazis and their accomplices, to preserve the memory and memorials in honor of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. Once adopted, the address will be distributed at the United Nations and other international organizations.

The agenda of the summit is rich. The leaders of the CIS member states are set to discuss issues related to security, high technology, and also cooperation in trade, economy, culture and humanitarian affairs. Aleksandr Lukashenko is also expected to attend informal events as part of the CIS summit.

As BelTA reported earlier citing the press service of the CIS Executive Committee, the heads of state will exchange views on cooperation within the CIS, and decide on the presidency in the CIS in 2025. The summit will also consider the activities of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on strengthening integration cooperation and a number of other issues.

The heads of state will sign decisions on declaring the CIS Capitals of Culture for the next three years, and adopt amendments to a number of documents on cooperation in legal matters and security. The heads of the CIS member states are also expected to adopt a number of statements.
