MOSCOW, 8 October (BelTA) - The CIS summit discussed an early peaceful settlement in the South Caucasus region between Azerbaijan and Armenia, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told the media in Moscow on 8 October, BelTA learned.
The heads of state expect the settlement process to be finalized in the near future.
The journalists asked Sergei Lebedev whether Armenia had any reservations when signing the documents. “Armenia approved almost all the documents that were proposed for signing at the meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council, as far as I am aware. During the narrow-format meeting the leaders had a substantive conversation on the issues of early peaceful settlement in the South Caucasus. I would like to emphasize: all the CIS heads of state wished the Azerbaijan president and the Armenian prime minister to come to a mutual agreement as soon as possible,” the CIS chief said. “Wishes are understandable. I was also pleased to hear that the leaders of both states were optimistic about the signing of a peace treaty.”
“No one, of course, has set specific deadlines. You understand that this case is complicated. But nevertheless, everyone present at the meeting expressed hope that this process will be finalized soon,” Sergei Lebedev said.
According to him, the signing of such an agreement would significantly improve the situation in the South Caucasus and would contribute to economic cooperation, interaction within the framework of transport corridors.
