MINSK, 19 August (BelTA) - CIS countries welcome the declaration on a peaceful settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan signed in the USA, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told reporters in Minsk on 19 August, BelTA learned.
On 8 August, the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the United States -Ilham Aliyev, Nikol Pashinyan, and Donald Trump - signed a joint declaration on a peaceful settlement between Baku and Yerevan and on the establishment of a transport corridor between the two South Caucasus countries. The transport corridor will be named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.
“Following the signing of the joint declaration between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington, CIS nations exchanged phone calls to exchange views on this agreement. Just as we welcomed the signing of the interstate border agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan back in the day, we are equally happy to welcome this joint declaration,” Sergei Lebedev said.
The CIS head noted that the CIS nations believe this is one of the steps toward the final resolution of disagreements and the achievement of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. "This will enable us [the CIS countries] to conduct full-fledged meetings of the CIS supreme bodies more effectively in these countries. I sincerely hope, as secretary general, that these countries will now participate more actively in CIS affairs,” Sergei Lebedev added.
"Following the meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin had telephone conversations with CIS partners to share insights on the negotiation outcomes. We strongly hope these concerted efforts by CIS leaders will lead to enhanced stability and greater peace across the CIS region. This is of utmost importance, Sergei Lebedev emphasized.
Minsk played host to a regular meeting of the CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representative on 19 August. During the meeting, the permanent representatives reviewed the draft agendas for the upcoming sessions of the CIS Ministerial Council, the Heads of Government Council and the Heads of State Council due in Dushanbe and Minsk this autumn. Progress in the development of the CIS legal framework development roadmap for 2023-2025, and results of its comprehensive review were on the agenda too.
