MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) - Moscow has no plans to fight against Europe but will respond to the potential deployment of European troops in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said addressing the Federation Council (Russian upper house of parliament), TASS reported.
“We have no plans to fight against Europe. No plans at all. However, we will respond to any hostile steps, including the deployment of European troops to Ukraine and the seizure of Russian assets. And we are already prepared to respond," he noted.
Sergey Lavrov added that the majority of NATO and EU members, the European Commission took “a completely destructive position” regarding the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, European countries are artificially hindering the peace process by urging Kiev to continue the hostilities.
The minister noted that Europe's “ideological zeal” is increasingly influenced by financial considerations. “Aside from plundering the Russian Federation and unlawfully seizing of our ts sovereign assets in violation of all conceivable norms of international and commercial law, they have no other sources left to fund this war,” Sergey Lavrov stated. According to him, more and more countries are recognizing the futility and lack of prospects in continuing this policy.
Sergey Lavrov expressed the Russian side's appreciation for U.S. President Donald Trump's pursuit of dialogue to resolve the conflict in Ukraine through diplomatic means. According to him, Trump has become the only Western leader to demonstrate an understanding of the root causes of the crisis. The diplomat added that Russia and the United States have agreed to continue working toward conflict resolution.
