MINSK, 26 October (BelTA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that the initiative to hold a high-level meeting between Russia and the United States remains relevant, but such negotiations require thorough preparation, RIA Novosti has reported.
He recalled the phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Trump proposed a meeting in Budapest and Putin agreed, suggesting preparing for the meeting. Following this, a phone conversation took place between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The Russian foreign minister also referenced a statement from the Department of State, which indicated that the conversation between him and Rubio had been productive and that there is currently no need for further meetings.
He emphasized that the initiative from the Russian side exists, and upon receiving an invitation, they are ready to discuss the format, location, and timing of the meeting. However, the U.S. side later stated that the cancellation of the invitation implies its postponement, leaving the question of next steps with the initiator.
