Latvian media reports about ‘Belarusian' diplomat dismissed as ‘hallucinations'

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) - The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the reports in the Latvian media about a Belarusian diplomat fleeing the scene of a car accident in Riga a lie, BelTA learned.

"We always take such things very seriously. So, yes, we are aware of these reports. But the thing is, thanks to the efforts of the Latvian side, there are no Belarusian diplomats left in Riga. Those who came with such insinuations probably forgot to take this into account. All the disseminated information is a primitive lie," Anatoly Glaz, press secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the media as he commented on this situation.

Anatoly Glaz noted that many photos and videos show the license plate of the vehicle. "For any Belarusian, it is obvious that this kind of license plates is used by foreign diplomats accredited in Minsk. We have received a number of requests following this story. So we identified the vehicle. For ethical reasons, we would not like to disclose all the details but we are talking about one of European diplomats working in our country,” Anatoly Glaz said.

“So what we have is a European diplomat ramming a car in the European Riga. Yet they put the blame on the Belarusian diplomatic staff who is not there,” he commented on the incident.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious offense in any state, Anatoly Glaz said. “In this regard, we agree with the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that no one must be allowed to violate the Vienna Convention. This is why we have sent them the information we have. They have the right to act on the basis of the law or proceeding from some other considerations. We will see. Their response or lack thereof will reveal a lot,” the spokesman said.
