Kochanova: MPs should play a bigger role in current difficult geopolitical situation

MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) – Amid the current difficult geopolitical situation MPs should play an even bigger role, said Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova as she met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic to Belarus Mohammad Aloumrani on 13 May, BelTA has learned.

“Our inter-parliamentary cooperation is very important for us as MPs. We are glad that we have the Inter-Parliamentary Committee. Of course, there are objective reasons for the fact that perhaps our meetings are not so regular today. This is because of the pandemic and a number of other factors. At the same time we would like to cooperate more closely and actively in order to take interaction between MPs of our countries onto a new higher level. That is why I assume that our meetings can also take place online,” said Natalya Kochanova.

According to the speaker, MPs should play a more significant role in the current difficult geopolitical situation. “We need to unite in order to work for the benefit of our peoples and countries. Our countries cooperate in various areas, including humanitarian affairs. We are always glad when Syrian children come to us and our young people communicate. I know they like it here very much. They have been coming to the Belarusian children's camp Zubrenok for several years already, where they make friends with our children. It is a pledge of future cooperation between our countries. Today, the relations between the Education Ministries of the two countries are developing very actively. The corresponding agreements have been signed,” she said.

Natalya Kochanova emphasized that there are about 30 agreements on cooperation between the two countries. “We hope that the situation will stabilize and we will be able to cooperate more closely in the trade and economic sector. With even humanitarian cargoes, we can see that logistics are complicated now. There are problems in trade and economic cooperation. There are serious prospects for cooperation, though,” said the chairwoman of the Council of the Republic.

“Our country is ready to cooperate with Syria across all the areas. We are open for cooperation. Our president has said many times that we are ready to provide any assistance to the Syrian people and Syria. I can assure you that this is true. You must have seen it yourself, working in our country. I wish you good luck and success in your difficult work, because it is a very responsible job. We hope for close and fruitful cooperation. Now more than ever, we need the support of our countries in the international arena, in international organizations. The support that the two countries enjoy today deserves all due respect,” Natalya Kochanova said.
