ASTANA, 4 July (BelTA) – Kazakhstan’s Nurlan Yermekbayev has been appointed SCO Secretary-General for the period of 2025-2027. The appointment was announced at the SCO summit in Astana on 4 July, BelTA has learned.

Zhang Ming of China has been SCO Secretary-General since 1 January 2022. In accordance with the established rotation principle, on 1 January 2025, his role as the SCO Secretary-General will be taken over by Nurlan Yermekbayev of Kazakhstan who is now SCO Deputy Secretary-General.

It is worth mentioning that Nurlan Yermekbayev is quite familiar with Belarus. In February 2024, he led the SCO election observation mission that monitored Belarus’ parliamentary and local elections.

Another remarkable personnel decision was the appointment of Ularbek Sharsheev of Kyrgyzstan as Director of the SCO Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure for the period from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2027. This personnel decision was also based on the rotation principle.
