Head of Russia's election organization agency to visit Belarus

MINSK, 17 May (BelTA) – Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko met with Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Russia Ella Pamfilova in Moscow, BelTA has learned.

A Belarusian delegation led by Igor Karpenko had arrived in Moscow the day before in order to meet with Russian colleagues and get familiar with peculiarities of organization of the single voting day and with innovations in the Russian election process: remote online voting, modern electoral standards, and new technological solutions. The delegation included personnel of Belarus' Central Election Commission and municipal government agencies.

Igor Karpenko said: “We've just held a referendum and the country's Constitution has been substantially changed. Just like you we are moving towards the single voting day. It is an innovation for us. We would certainly like to take into account all the nuances in 2024 in order to properly organize this electoral campaign. This is why this topic is interesting for us. It is understandable that we are interested in the technologies in use and in the experience of Russia's CEC regarding the organization of constant training of members of polling station commissions.”

During the meeting Ella Pamfilova talked about peculiarities of Russia's election system, shared experience and mechanisms for preparing and carrying out the single voting day. The sides also discussed future bilateral cooperation prospects.

Igor Karpenko invited Ella Pamfilova to visit Belarus. The head of Russia's CEC noted she had never been to Belarus and would definitely find time to visit the country.

Organizing a joint session of Belarus' and Russia's CECs during an official visit of the Russian delegation to Belarus was suggested. The sides are expected to sign an agreement on cooperation between the two election organization agencies.
