Former Ukrainian MP: Ukraine got itself into deadlock

MINSK, 22 October (BelTA) - Ukraine overestimated itself, former member of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Spiridon Kilinkarov said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.

"As for Ukraine, it drove itself into a unique situation. I understand that there is no situation the Ukrainians would not get settled in, but what did the country get as a result of all these political mistakes? We cannot move eastward as there is an enemy there, Russia. We cannot move westward, because we will not be admitted into the European Union because of Poland and its firm position on the Volyn massacre. Poland demands exhumation, and we understand how this exhumation will end for Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine will never take this step," Spiridon Kilinkarov said.

The Ukrainian politician added: "Now Ukrainians have to figure out this deadlock called Ukraine. Because we can't move anywhere. Ukraine's problem is that it has overestimated itself. It overestimated its importance from the point of view of the security of Europe and Russia. The post-war security architecture was built on what? On buffer zones. Buffer zone between Western Europe and Russia. Eastern Europe countries were a bridge between Western Europe and the Russian Federation. After several waves of NATO’s eastward expansion, there is no need for these buffer zones. There are only fragments of small countries left. But no one is interested in them anymore."

"Therefore, the new security architecture will definitely not be built on buffer zones. There will simply be no such states between two large military-political associations. Now, in fact, the war is going on for this, for where and how it will all be divided, because no one is interested in buffer zones, no one is interested in bridges. This is all a thing of the past. This architecture has already been destroyed, and it is no longer possible to rebuild it," Spiridon Kilinkarov said.

According to Spiridon Kilinkarov, therefore, there will be a search for some new security option. "There are some direct agreements. But this will definitely not be what we had. It will definitely be impossible to return to the past. From this point of view, Ukraine is doomed to either join one military-political association or another. Staying on your own is no longer interesting to anyone. It is clear that the powers-that-be will resolve the issues without paying attention to the position or policy of those who are in the weak position. Ukraine, in my opinion, does not even have the right to an advisory vote on the issue of war and peace," the Ukrainian politician concluded.
