Foreign ministers of Belarus, Syria adopt statement against sanctions

MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov and Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh signed a joint statement on ways and means of counteracting, mitigating and eliminating the negative consequences of unilateral coercive measures following the talks in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

"We are very pleased with the level of cooperation with Syria in all international organizations where we support each other on country issues or where we promote our initiatives," the Belarusian minister said.

He also stressed: "Promoting the Belarusian-Syrian cooperation, expanding political contacts and trade ties will also contribute to our development in the context of the absolutely illegal restrictions that are applied by the so-called collective West against Belarus and Syria."

"As the Belarusian president says, sanctions are not only about restrictions. They create new opportunities. We are ready to harness these opportunities together with our friends from Syria. We have adopted a joint statement on the unacceptability of the use of unilateral restrictive measures that affect trade, humanitarian goods, food security, sport, culture and other areas of international relations," Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

The parties also signed a memorandum on political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
