Foreign minister accuses Lithuania of exploiting conflict with Belarus for political points

MINSK, 9 November (BelTA) – The Baltic states feel an unbridled desire to score political points from the conflict with Belarus. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxim Ryzhenkov made the statement on the air of the TV channel Belarus One, BelTA has learned.

Maxim Ryzhenkov stressed: “All the confrontation stems from their unbridled desire to gain from the conflict potential. To score political points by demonstrating to the entire European Union how they allegedly hold in check barbarian hordes and therefore they should be respected for it and should get help for it. Because the Baltic states cannot show their worth otherwise. Absolutely cannot.”

He remarked that the industrial and logistics potential of these states is not that high and they are rolling into the abyss from the point of view of demography. “This is why they want to gain at least something somehow,” the minister added.

The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs recalled the show Poland had recently staged at the border with Belarus. As a result Poland was granted tens of billions of euros to improve its border infrastructure. Maxim Ryzhenkov remarked that oversight over the spending of these assets is virtually non-existent, which is convenient for politicians. It seems that Lithuania has decided to follow down the same path. “Wait for beautiful infusions from the European Union into Lithuania,” the minister surmised.

According to the information he has, Lithuanian shipping companies have recently lost about $1 billion. It is quite a lot of money on the scale of Lithuania. “And the loss of the reputation as a reliable partner in freight transportation costs much more and the delayed effect will be felt for years to come. I don’t know what people in Lithuania are thinking. But it doesn’t benefit the people of Lithuania and it absolutely doesn’t meet interests of the state. That’s for sure. Every step like that brings only losses to Lithuania,” the Belarusian diplomat stated.
