MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) - Women play an important role in the political and economic sectors of Belarus, and world rankings confirm this, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov said as he spoke at the high-level discussion “The Thirtieth Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action” during the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 24 February, BelTA has learned.
“The adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was a historic achievement in the global struggle for women's rights and gender equality,” Maksim Ryzhenkov said. “Thanks to the efforts of the Chinese government in 1995, women's rights were brought to a qualitatively new level. China has played an important role not only in strengthening international cooperation on gender equality, but also in giving impetus to the implementation of practical measures to improve the status of women in all countries.”
The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs drew attention to the following: “The key goals of the Beijing Declaration set clear and precise guidelines for the governments on the way to eliminating gender inequality. Based on them, the world community was able to achieve significant success in promoting women in the political, economic and public sectors of life.”
Maksim Ryzhenkov went on saying: “It is very important to continue moving forward on the basis of the achieved successes, and Belarus will continue its efforts in the implementation of these documents, because gender equality is not only women's rights, it is a key element of sustainable and equitable development.”
“I will not go into details today. Everyone is well aware of our achievements - women play an important role in politics, economy and the social sector of our country. World rankings confirm this,” he said.
The minister emphasized that Belarus would be glad to share its achievements and positive experience in gender equality and enhancing the role of women in society and the state.
“You are welcome to come,” the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs invited those present at the meeting.
