FM: Together with like-minded states Belarus will fight back against West's sanctions

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) - Together with the like-minded states, Belarus will be fighting back against the sanctions of the West, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview with China Central Television, BelTA has learned.

The minister stressed that Western countries have ceased to observe even the smallest decency when imposing sanctions against a state. They change the laws just to punish a particular country. “They say they support the sovereignty and independence of Belarus, but in fact, all these sanctions are aimed at the total destruction of the sovereignty and independence of Belarus, at undermining the statehood of Belarus,” said Vladimir Makei.

“We will of course develop adequate responses to the restrictive measures that have been taken against Belarus. We will create a circle of like-minded states. We will raise these issues at all international forums, as these measures are absolutely illegal, they are authorized by neither the UN Charter nor other international agreements. Together with like-minded states we will do our best to fight back against these sanctions,” he continued.

According to the minister, the consequences of sanctions on the global economy and the economies of individual countries are already visible: fuel and energy prices have soared. “We can see that a number of countries have voiced a possible threat of famine in connection with a shortage of potash fertilizers. Belarus accounted for one fifth of the world's potash fertilizer supplies. They have now forgotten about the pandemic, they have forgotten about the fight against climate change, while these remain real threats and large-scale challenges facing all the humanity. Therefore, I think that these hasty measures introduced by the Western countries will have a very strong impact on the comprehensive development of our planet in the future, including in the economic, political, environmental and all other areas,” Vladimir Makei said.
