MINSK, 6 May (BelTA) – The USA and the EU are competing who will impose more sanctions on Belarus and Russia, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media, BelTA has learned.

“The United States, the European Union and their allies have already embarked on a nearly ‘socialist' competition of sanctions. At first sanctions were introduced every six months, after that once a quarter, now monthly. Our proposals for dialogue are flatly rejected. Earlier it was said that these sanctions are selective in nature and will not target ordinary people, while now they already openly say that the main thing is to strangle the economy, isolate states and destroy the sovereignty and independence of Russia and Belarus,” Vladimir Makei noted.

He added that no one in the West is talking about supporting the sovereignty and independence of Belarus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will take this into account in its work. “We will take adequate response measures,” the minister said.
