MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) - Belarus is always ready for fruitful and equal cooperation with the United States, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the session of the CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiaries in statutory and other bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States on 28 January, BelTA has learned.
“We have always said that we are aimed at equal, fruitful, close and constructive cooperation. We understand the role of the United States in the world today. That is why we are interested in having a normal, constructive interaction with this country,” said Vladimir Makei.
According to the minister, Belarus is interested in welcoming the U.S. ambassador in Belarus as soon as possible. Belarus is now looking for a new candidate to head the diplomatic mission in Washington (Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko, who was appointed to the post earlier, passed away in 2020). “We are now choosing a candidate for the post of the ambassador. We have several candidates and we will report our proposals to the head of state. I think we will decide on the candidate in the near future,” stated Vladimir Makei.
He also stressed positive developments in the U.S.-Russian relations in international security with the arrival of the new U.S. administration. “All this inspires a certain cautious optimism, and we certainly support this kind of effort, which will contribute to greater stability and calm in our region and the world,” the minister added.
