M: Belarus decides against appointing ambassador to United States in current conditions
MINSK, 2 September (BelTA) – Belarus has picked up the candidate for the post of ambassador to the United States, but believes it makes no sense to send him there in the current conditions, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media on 2 September, BelTA has learned.
"Relations with the United States, as with any other state, are always important for us. At one point, we did a selection process of the candidate for the post of the ambassador to the United States and decided on the candidate, but in the current conditions, we think it makes no sense to send our ambassador to the United States in view of the U.S. sanctions against our country," the minister said.
Vladimir Makei stressed that it was not Belarus that initiated these quite drastic steps. "It was the United States that imposed the sanctions against Belarus. We were forced to give an adequate response to the aggressive steps that were taken against Belarus," he said.
"Given these conditions, we, of course, did not consider it possible to host such an ambassador as Mrs. Fisher in Belarus and withdrew our agreman. Even before arriving in the country, she made so many offensive statements against Belarus and its people that we considered her stay here as inadvisable," the minister said.
