Expert describes current presidential campaign in Poland as ‘extremely dirty’

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) - The current election campaign in Poland was more about emotions rather than programs and was extremely dirty, Radio Bialystok journalist Źmicier Kościn told the Lithuanian media.

"In fact, this whole election campaign was more about emotions rather than programs. It was extremely dirty. I don't recall another presidential race in Poland where candidates so openly resorted to xenophobic statements or used scandals to attract support," he said.

He said the results of the first round show that Poland is in for an even fiercer fight in the next two weeks and that the outcome of the election is still completely unpredictable.

On 18 May, Poland held the first round of the presidential election, which did not reveal the winner. According to the final results, Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, representing the ruling Civic Coalition, won 31.36% of the vote, while his main rival, conservative Karol Nawrocki of the Law and Justice (PiS) party received 29.54%. Since neither candidate won 50% in the first round, the second round has been scheduled for 1 June.

"The game is just beginning. A tough fight for every vote. These two weeks will decide the future of our homeland," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X on 18 May.

According to Źmicier Kościn, both Karol Nawrocki and Rafal Trzaskowski were guided not by political programs but by the results of polls. "Poland is increasingly turning into a populist state," he believes.

Źmicier Kościn also believes that the current Polish government will not reach the end of its term and that the country might have early parliamentary elections. "After 2023, Poland is in a state of turbulence. It is possible that some of the coalition breaks down and this will necessitate early elections. It seems to me that everything is moving in this very direction," he noted.
