European Union blamed for surge in food prices

MINSK, 9 June (BelTA) - The European Union is the one to be blamed for growing food costs in the world, Russian economist Vasily Koltashov, the head of the New Society Institute, said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

"The World Bank's forecast for surging prices for oil, energy, fertilizers, food, in fact for everything, has come true earlier than expected. The increase is 50% on average," Vasily Koltashov said.

According to him, this is a catastrophe and it is looming over many countries. "It is the West that plays a decisive role in this catastrophe. It is the one to be blamed for it. The European Union is to be blamed for the spiraling food prices in the world. Because the European Union is generating the price hike," the expert said. “How? By its policy of sanctions that creates chaos: transport chaos, a shortage of goods, and then a rise in prices. This price increase spills over into the international market. The weakening of the European currency against the dollar also contributes to it. "

"The Eurocracy, the Brussels bureaucracy, which is hated by peoples of Europe - the French, the Hungarians, the Poles, even the Dutch and the Danes, not to mention the Greeks and the Spaniards – are generating a price hike and very high inflation in the European Union which leads to the world food shortages and high costs," Vasily Koltashov stated.
