MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) - MEPs adopted by a majority of votes a resolution calling on the EU not to recognize the results of the upcoming presidential election in Belarus and to strengthen sanctions against Minsk, BelTA learned from the official website of the European Parliament.
It is known that the EP resolutions on foreign policy issues are of a recommendatory nature and are not binding for the EU institutions or member states.
At a briefing for the press on 22 January Anatoly Glaz, a representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mentioned a gross interference in the sovereign affairs of Belarus during the election campaign. “The document is a gross interference in the electoral processes of a sovereign state, has nothing to do with the real state of affairs and is designed to put pressure on the free expression of the will of Belarusian citizens,” he said.
