EAEU’s contribution to food security discussed at FAO HQ in Rome upon Belarus’ initiative

MINSK, 20 November (BelTA) – Upon the initiative of Belarus, which presides over the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), an event was organized at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy to discuss the role the Eurasian Economic Union plays in ensuring global food security, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event was co-organized by the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to FAO and other UN agencies in Rome. Heads of the missions of all the EAEU states to FAO took part in the event.
Belarus’ Permanent Representative to FAO and other international organizations in Rome Yuri Ambrazevich presented priorities of Belarus’ presidency in the EAEU bodies. He stressed the significance of the EAEU’s economic and logistic systems for providing the countries in need with food and with the means of making food, including fertilizers.
Member of the Board (Minister) for Industry and Agribusiness of the Eurasian Economic Commission Gohar Barseghyan sketched out the Eurasian Economic Union’s key accomplishments in developing the common agribusiness complex and its role in the world food security system.

Opinions were exchanged. Most of the participants stressed that the unilateral economic restrictions enforced by the West against Belarus are illegitimate and harmful to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty and hunger.
