Belskaya: West is increasing pressure on Belarus

MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) - The West wants to take revenge for failing to destroy the political system in Belarus in 2020 and is increasing pressure on our country, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Larisa Belskaya said as she addressed the group of independent experts on the human rights situation in Belarus on 19 March, BelTA learned.

The dialogue took place in the framework of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council. “Five years have passed since the presidential election in Belarus in 2020, which the West tried to use to implode the political system and create chaos in the country. It didn't succeed. But it wants to take revenge. Increasing pressure on Belarus confirms this assessment,” Larisa Belskaya said.

She noted that the Belarusian society and the state had stood firm in 2020 and will stand firm now. “The country is developing, confidently moving forward. During the recent presidential election, the people of Belarus confirmed their choice in favor of stability,” the Belarusian diplomat stressed.
“The people of Belarus appreciate the efforts by the state to ensure peace and prosperity, to use every opportunity to best realize their rights, freedoms and potential in all walks of life. This policy is supported by hundreds of NGOs and hundreds of trade union organizations, which address real problems and protect people's rights without opposing the state,” Larisa Belskaya stated.

She also stated that there are no politically motivated persecutions in Belarus. "There is a clear legal framework for the realization of social, civil, economic, and political rights. Everyone must be treated equally under the law regardless of professional or public activities. Everyone is equally accountable to the law and responsible for its violations, whether the citizen is in the country or abroad," Larisa Belskaya said.

" Belarus' policy is based on the principles of compassion. In 2024, the head of state pardoned 293 individuals convicted of crimes against state who asked for pardon, including for humanitarian reasons. The readmission commission has been operating for the third year to assist Belarusians who live abroad in resolving their issues within the legal framework," Larisa Belskaya stated.

"Belarus will continue progressing in human rights in accordance with its national conditions and sovereign interests, as outlined in the UN Charter. We do not need the politicized tools of the Human Rights Council, which serve a group of countries exerting pressure on Belarus. I urge to terminate these mechanisms," she concluded.
