MOSCOW, 23 August (BelTA) – The Collective Security Treaty Organization calls for looking for opportunities to rule out a civil confrontation in Afghanistan. Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Stanislav Zas made the statement at a video briefing held after the extraordinary videoconference session of the CSTO Collective Security Council on 23 August, BelTA has learned.
Stanislav Zas said that participants of the session had discussed the possibility of a civil conflict in Afghanistan, in particular, a conflict between northern provinces and the Taliban movement. “We call for stopping this confrontation, for establishing a dialogue inside Afghanistan, and for building a government system in Afghanistan taking into account interests of all the nationalities that live there and all the communities,” the official stressed. “The emerging confrontation between the northern provinces and the Taliban movement may have very grave consequences for the Afghan people and for the region as a whole.”
“This is why everything should be done to avoid this confrontation,” Stanislav Zas said.
The extraordinary session of the CSTO Collective Security Council was convened upon Russia's initiative. It was chaired by Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko took part in the session. Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in the session in addition to the leaders of the CSTO member states.
