Brazilian parliament discusses shortage of Belarusian fertilizers

MINSK, 14 April (BelTA) - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Brazil Sergei Lukashevich addressed the Brazilian parliament at the invitation of the Agricultural Parliamentary Front (FPA). The participants in the meeting discussed ways to solve the fertilizer crisis in Brazil, BelTA learned from the Belarusian diplomatic mission.

“It was stressed that fertilizers from Belarus are extremely important for Brazilian agriculture. Belarus and Brazil together can solve any difficult situation,” the embassy said.

According to Brazil's largest news portal G1 Globo, the events in Ukraine and sanctions imposed by the West prevent the import of fertilizers from Belarus and Russia. Such a situation can affect the harvest in the country, the media said.

A study conducted by the IPA (Instituto Pensar Agropecuaria, IPA) shows that Brazil is more than 70% dependent on international supplies of fertilizers used in agriculture. For example, in 2021 the country shipped in about 41 million tonnes of raw materials. Up to 60% of fertilizer supplies came from five countries: Belarus, Russia, China, Canada and Morocco.

The material presented by Instituto Pensar Agropecuaria showed the importance of Belarus as a fertilizer exporter. In 2021 Belarus sold to Brazil about 2.39 million tonnes of fertilizers worth $580 million.
