MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) - Selective country mechanisms turn the international dimension of human rights into a farce, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Larisa Belskaya said as she addressed the group of independent experts on the human rights situation in Belarus on 19 March, BelTA learned.
She believes: “This is a dead end in the work of the Human Rights Council that has no mandate for so-called investigations and assessments of the political structure of sovereign states. Establishing any country-specific mechanisms without the consent of a country is counterproductive.”
“Scaling up the practice of country-specific mechanisms makes it obvious that they serve the interests of their initiators rather than the purposes of promoting cooperation,” Larisa Belskaya noted. “These mandates best serve the manipulative policy of the West. And the more mandates there are, the more odious their findings are, the better”.
“On the basis of such reports on Belarus, the West imposes sanctions, justifies interference in internal affairs, in electoral processes, finances those who seek to destroy the Belarusian statehood and lobbies for sanctions to harm the country where they failed to seize power. It is their position that is used as a source of information for such reports,” Larisa Belskaya added.
The dialogue took place in the framework of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
“The report voiced today is yet another sad testimony to how selective country mechanisms turn the international dimension of human rights into a farce,” the Belarusian diplomat emphasized.
