MINSK, 12 March (BelTA) – The task of the leading nuclear-armed states and the international community is to find points of convergence despite disagreements, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus Larisa Belskaya said during the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland, on 12 March, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Today, no one has a magic formula for how to prevent a nuclear arms race and firmly move toward nuclear disarmament. However, everyone understands the need for joint efforts in this direction,” the Belarusian diplomat noted.
According to her, the task of the leading nuclear powers, and of the international community as a whole, is not only to discuss quantitative parameters of armaments and approaches to their reduction, but above all to seek common ground despite disagreements. This means restoring strategic responsibility and engagement to ensure the most objective possible assessment of risks and their reduction.
“I would like to believe that the Conference on Disarmament will be able to play a positive role in these processes,” Larisa Belskaya said.
She stressed that the Belarusian side attaches great importance to the upcoming Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which remains the fundamental document in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The Treaty sets out rational goals toward which the international community must consistently strive.
“The emerging lack of cooperation and trust must not become the new norm. The sooner it is filled with new bilateral and multilateral agreements capable of restoring a minimum level of predictability, a logic of mutual understanding, and shared responsibility, the further the world will be from the threat of nuclear war,” Larisa Belskaya stated.
