Belarusian Parliament slams draft resolution on Belarus by U.S. Congress

MINSK, 1 August (BelTA) - The Presidium of the Council of the Republic adopted a statement in connection with the draft resolution on Belarus submitted to the Senate of the U.S. Congress, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of Belarusian Parliament.

"A draft resolution on Belarus has been submitted to the Senate of the U.S. Congress. American lawmakers once again, in violation of the Charter of the United Nations, are grossly interfering in the internal affairs of the Republic of Belarus and putting forward unsubstantiated accusations against it. It is high time for U.S. senators to learn that sovereignty and independence are unshakable values for the Belarusian people, and there will never be a compromise on these issues. Our country, an active participant in integration economic projects, a donor of security in the region, has always pursued a peaceful foreign policy. It is unacceptable that the Belarusian issue is illegally considered in the U.S. Senate on the basis of outright fake claims and disinformation," the statement reads.

“A country that constantly seeks to impose its human rights practices on everyone should finally be shown that it itself has acute problems in its society, including in human rights: persecution of opponents of the current government, rampant police violence, lack of respect for fair trial, and the largest number of cases and deaths from COVID-19 in the world,” the senators said.

“In their mentor attempts to teach other nations how to live, the U.S. political establishment has become unconcerned about its citizens and their problems. U.S. senators are blind to the threat of a growing domestic crisis and demonstrate a complete disconnect from the real needs of the American people and an utter inability to understand their needs. We urge the U.S. lawmakers to stop interfering in the internal affairs of the Republic of Belarus, stop their criminal activities of applying unilateral illegal sanctions, which violate international law, and concentrate on solving the problems of their own people,” the statement reads.
