Belarusian FM slams West for violating international law

MINSK, 20 December (BelTA) - The West is always lecturing Belarus on democracy but violates all imaginable norms of international law, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview with RT Arabic TV Channel on 18 December, BelTA has learned.

"The West is always lecturing us on democracy, calls us to observe the rule of law. Yet, the West itself, in particular Poland and the Baltic countries, have violated all imaginable norms of international law, morality and ethics with regard to migrants," Vladimir Makei emphasized.

According to all the norms of international law, European countries should have considered the applications of refugees for asylum, but instead they beat migrants, and sometimes killed, throwing the bodies back across the border, the minister noted.

"What happened some time ago at the border, when migrants tried to peacefully enter the territory of the European Union through a checkpoint, and Poland used water cannons against women and children, tear gas in cold temperature, cannot be explained at all," the minister stressed. " Poland and the Baltic states are in no way the paragon of democracy."

Vladimir Makei also mentioned a Polish soldier who asked for asylum in Belarus. According to the minister, "he has told us about the horrible things that happened on the territory of Poland."
