Belarusian FM comments on situation in Middle East

MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) - Ukraine lost relevance during the active phase of the conflict in the Middle East, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA reports.

According to him, the conflict in the Middle East will have catastrophic consequences for Europe. The European region does not have much of its own resources, and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz would pose a serious challenge to the EU economy. In addition, according to Maksim Ryzhenkov, the conflict between Israel and Iran could have eventually led to the use of much more lethal weapons and involve other players.

“The regional military confrontation with the possible use of nuclear weapons. This could have been much more than just a regional conflict,” he said.

When asked whether the conflict in Ukraine will fade into the background, Maksim Ryzhenkov noted that during the active phase of confrontation between Israel and Iran, few people remembered about Ukraine. “Europe is more concerned about other things. And such a conflict can damage Europe’s interests much harder and more seriously,” the Belarusian foreign minister added.

As for the Belarusian-American track, the progress is there, Maksim Ryzhenkov said: "The basis of this movement is the political diplomacy of our president."
