Belarusian FM attends expanded session of BRICS ministerial meeting in Russia

MINSK, 12 June (BelTA) - Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik took part in an expanded session of the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting with the participation of the foreign ministers of like-minded countries representing regional formats of interaction such as the SCO, ASEAN, the Indian Ocean Coastal Cooperation Association, the African Union, the League of Arab States and others in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia on 11 June, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The meeting focused on the key aspects of the formation of a more equitable world order, the role of the countries of the Global South and East in these processes. The participants discussed current international challenges, including ensuring equal security, sustainable development and long-term economic growth. 

In his speech, Sergei Aleinik noted the importance of preserving peace, maintaining economic stability and social well-being of peoples, outlined the priority areas of cooperation for Belarus with BRICS, and also voiced the interest of Belarus to take part in the work of the group as a partner. 

On the sidelines of the event, Sergei Aleinik held bilateral talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Ali Sabry to discuss ways to intensify bilateral relations, humanitarian cooperation and promising economic projects. An agreement was reached to restart the instruments of Belarusian-Sri Lankan cooperation. 

Sergei Aleinik also met with Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR. The discussion covered such topics as Belarus’ more active engagement with ASEAN (chaired by Laos in 2024), support in international organizations, a schedule of promising meetings and the development of the legal framework of the bilateral cooperation.

The exchange of visits at various levels and several landmark projects in trade, economy, science and technology were discussed with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud.
The results of the third meeting of the Joint Belarusian-Saudi Intergovernmental Committee held in Riyadh in May 2024 were highly appreciated.

The meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan focused on the progress in the implementation of the agreements that were updated following the visit of the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs to Ankara in November 2023, the regional situation and interaction in international organizations, including the OSCE. 

The meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Taye Atskeselassie discussed the alignment of the economic potentials of Belarus and the BRICS countries, including Ethiopia, and the modalities of joint work in economy. The parties also considered the prospects for cooperation in agriculture, education, strengthening the industrial potential of Ethiopia and expanding mutual trade. 

On the sidelines of the event the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs had a brief exchange of views on topical issues with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Kazakhstan’s Vice Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu.
