Belarusian FM arrives in Iran

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik arrived in Iran, BelTA has learned. 

In accordance with the instructions of the head of state, Belarus will be represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik at the official funeral ceremony for President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials who died in the helicopter crash.

The funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will be held in his hometown of Mashhad in the northeast of the country on 23 May. The farewell ceremony will be held first in Tabriz, then Qom, Tehran, Birjand, and Mashhad.

As it has been reported, a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan on 19 May. On board were also Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, East Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, East Azerbaijan Imam of Friday Prayer Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem and the head of the presidential guard. All passengers and crew died in the crash.

Aleksandr Lukashenko sent condolences to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Khamenei over the tragic death of the country's president and a number of high-ranking leaders. "I will remember him as a very professional and wise politician who did a lot to strengthen the Belarusian-Iranian relations. I convey words of support and wishes of fortitude to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims. I am deeply grieving together with the entire Iranian people,” reads the entry left on behalf of the Belarusian president in the book of condolences in the Iranian embassy.
