Belarusian expert finds situation with refugees at border incompliant with international law

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – The situation with refugees at the Belarusian-Polish border runs contrary to all norms of international law. Deputy Dean of the Law Faculty of the A.S. Pushkin State University of Brest, Candidate of Political Sciences Eduard Severin made the statement on the air of the TV channel Belarus One, BelTA has learned.

Eduard Severin said: “The current situation contradicts all norms of international law. The right to asylum is stipulated [by many documents] starting with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ending with some of the latest documents – the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants and the Global Compact on Refugees.”

In his words, every person has the right to shelter and the right to use it. “Speculations that refugees are being brought to Belarus' territory in a systemic organized manner are groundless. Because there are no facts that prove it. Today citizens of foreign states absolutely legally stay in Belarus' territory,” Eduard Severin added.
