MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) - Diplomats of the Belarusian embassy in Germany held memorial ceremonies to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora in Thuringia, Germany on 8 April, BelTA learned the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Germany.
Wreaths with Belarusian state symbols were laid by representatives of the diplomatic mission at the memorial plate to the fallen prisoners in the Buchenwald memorial complex and at the monument to the fallen prisoners of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp.
The Buchenwald concentration camp was established by the Nazis in 1937. Prisoners of the camp and its 139 satellite camps were representatives of more than 50 countries. The total number of prisoners amounted to about 280,000 people, of whom 56,000 died, including more than 8,000 Soviet prisoners of war killed by the Nazis.
The Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp was established in 1943 as a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Its prisoners were used as slave labor. In 1944, Mittelbau became an independent concentration camp with 40 subcamps of its own. Up to 60,000 prisoners were held there. 20,000 of them died.
