MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) - The closure of the border with Belarus by Poland threatens stability in the region, Chargé d'Affaires of Belarus to the United Nations Artyom Tozik at a meeting of the UN Security Council, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian diplomat noted that the current UN Security Council meeting is being held against the backdrop of Poland's closure of its border with Belarus.
“Automotive and railway traffic has been stopped, transit has been paralyzed, and the movement of people has been ceased. Does this not create real threats to stability in the region? The decision of the Polish authorities to close the border with Belarus is an example of groundless, anti-people steps directed against ordinary citizens of both Belarus and Poland, as well as foreign nationals,” Artyom Tozik said.
According to him, such steps by the Polish side are an obvious abuse of its geographical position, a privatization of the borders of the EU, the EAEU, the West, and the East.
“Such measures are a continuation of the course to undermine relations with neighboring countries and contribute to the further escalation of tension in the region, creating risks to stability and predictability in international relations. The leadership of the UN and the European Union should give a principled assessment of such actions,” the diplomat emphasized.
The representative of Belarus called on the UN Security Council to look at these actions and respond appropriately. “Instead of destabilizing rhetoric and behavior, we call on all parties to return to the path of constructive interaction and dialogue. We reiterate Belarus' commitment to exclusively peaceful steps to resolve the confrontation. We are ready to continue facilitating the search for mutually acceptable resolutions to the conflict,” Artyom Tozik said.
