MINSK, 5 February (BelTA) - Belarus welcomes the decision to renew the Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States of America on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms of 8 April 2010 for 5 years, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“We see this as a significant contribution to strengthening the existing international security architecture and strategic stability. The renewal of the New START Treaty is undoubtedly in the interests of the entire international community. We hope that the treaty will lay a solid foundation for further concrete steps in nuclear disarmament and that this process will be irreversible and multilateral,” the ministry said.
The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also hopes that the decision of Moscow and Washington to preserve the START Treaty, which is one of the cornerstones of the global system of strategic stability, security and disarmament, will contribute to creating favorable conditions for strengthening and restoring the viability of multilateral arms control mechanisms in the Euro-Atlantic area.
