MINSK, 13 October (BelTA) - Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Sergei Rachkov will lead a Belarusian parliamentary delegation at the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and related events to be held in Geneva from 13 to 17 October, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.
In 2024 the IPU focuses on peace, international security and sustainable development. Meetings of the Assembly will be devoted to these topics. Sergei Rachkov will speak on the overarching theme: Harnessing science, technology, and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future. The discussion is intended to provide an opportunity for IPU member parliaments and other participating delegations to explore the prospects for using science, technology and innovation to address the challenges and threats of our time.
All IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs, will meet on this occasion. Sergei Rachkov, as chairman of the Eurasia Geopolitical Group, will take part in the joint meeting with the chairpersons of the Geopolitical Groups and the presidents of the Standing Committees, will hold a meeting of the Eurasia group and a coordination meeting of the heads of parliamentary delegations of the CSTO member states to the IPU. Sergei Rachkov is scheduled to speak at the meeting of the High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism. During the panel discussion in the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, Sergei Rachkov will take part in the discussion of the role of parliamentarians in ensuring nuclear security.
The assembly is set to hold elections to the IPU bodies, to consider the amendments to the charter and rules of the organization and to honor the winner of the Cremer-Passy Prize.
