Belarus to open office of honorary consul in Uganda

MINSK, 21 February (BelTA) – An office of Belarus' honorary consul will open in Uganda, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Lukashevich said during the official visit of Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko to Uganda, BelTA has learned.

Africa is currently experiencing a renaissance, Sergei Lukashevich noted. Belarus clearly understands what the countries of this continent need - technology, well-developed agriculture and industrial sector, and so on.

The Belarusian delegation arrived in Uganda on an official visit to explore cooperation opportunities, he noted. “The tasks set by both the president and the head of government of our country will certainly be fulfilled. And these tasks are well known to everyone. We cooperate with those countries with which we share views on the need for a multipolar world order. These countries have common understanding of justice, are interested in reasonable cooperation and interaction without sanctions. Uganda is of great interest to us in this regard,” he emphasized.

A solid foundation for bilateral cooperation is to be laid during the visit. Sergei Lukashevich expressed confidence that all agreements reached during the visit will be fully implemented.

“We are currently developing the contractual and legal framework. The Agriculture and Food Ministry, the Industry Ministry and, of course, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are off to a good start here. On behalf of Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov, we are opening the Office of the Honorary Consul of Belarus in Uganda today. This is a solid, important diplomatic step that will bring our positions closer in the international arena and, in principle, lay the foundation for our cooperation,” he said.

Another significant achievement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the signing of an agreement on waiving visas for holders of service and diplomatic passports. By the way, on 20 February, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed Decree No. 68 to approve the draft agreement on visa waiver as a basis for negotiations between the governments. “The abolition of visas will facilitate visits of Ugandan delegations to Belarus and our trips to this beautiful, warm, flamboyant and green country. Therefore, we are moving forward with great optimism and confidence, just like our Ugandan partners,” Sergei Lukashevich said.

Belarus' government delegation led by Roman Golovchenko arrived on an official visit to Uganda on 20 February. Negotiations were held with the country's leadership to discuss cooperation prospects, with a focus on agriculture.
