Belarus supports Russia's call for UN Security Council permanent members summit

MINSK, 30 January (BelTA) – Belarus Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“While discussing international politics, the Belarusian and Russian diplomats agreed on the importance of the initiative to hold a meeting of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to discuss important issues on the global agenda that was put forward by the Russian president,” the press service said.

Andrei Dapkiunas noted that such a summit could become an important step in promoting a serious interstate dialogue about ways to strengthen cooperation and security in the entire Eurasian-Atlantic region. The idea of such a dialogue has been consistently promoted by Belarus lately.

The parties also discussed Belarus-Russia cooperation in international organizations, primarily in the UN. They also touched upon preparations for celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and relevant joint activities at the bilateral level and within the framework of the CIS.

Andrei Dapkiunas and Dmitry Mezentsev exchanged opinions about prospects of development of interregional cooperation between the two countries, including preparations for the next Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia due in Belarus in 2020.
