MINSK, 11 October (BelTA) – Belarusian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to India and concurrently to Sri Lanka Mikhail Kasko held talks with the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament Jagath Wickramaratne. During the talks, the parties emphasized the high level of cooperation across a wide range of areas, the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry told BelTA.
“The prospects for expanding cooperation in the manufacturing industry, agriculture, and renewable energy were discussed. The Belarusian ambassador conveyed a message of greetings from Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova, inviting a Sri Lankan delegation led by Jagath Wickramaratne to visit Belarus,” the press service noted.
At the invitation of the Sri Lankan side, the ambassador attended a parliamentary session during which a decision was made to establish a friendship group with the Republic of Belarus and approve its membership. Pathmanathan Sathiyalingam, a graduate of Vitebsk State Medical University, was elected secretary of the group.
In Colombo, Ambassador Mikhail Kasko also met with Sri Lanka’s Secretary of Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Kapila Perera. The parties discussed cooperation in civil aviation.
The Belarusian diplomat sttessed that the launch of direct charter flights from Belarus to Sri Lanka in October 2025 will be a landmark event ahead of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The parties agreed on the need to move forward in this direction and to conclude an air services agreement in the near future, which will allow the launch of regular flights between Minsk and Colombo. “This will create comfortable conditions for citizens’ travel and provide an additional incentive for cooperation in education, tourism, and the economy,” the ministry emphasized.
