Belarus seeks further development of cooperation with Uzbekistan

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – Belarus is aimed at further development of bilateral relations with Uzbekistan, Belarus Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said as he met with outgoing Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Belarus Nasirdjan Yusupov on 9 February, BelTA has learned.

Roman Golovchenko stressed that the two countries have good, friendly relations. “We discussed with the prime minister of Uzbekistan the intensification of bilateral cooperation, and he noted the positive resonance that your recent meeting with the Belarusian president had in your country. I think you can be proud of the results of your work as an ambassador. I would like to discuss today what else we can do in the near future to bring the bilateral relations to a qualitatively new level,” he said.

Nasirdjan Yusupov thanked for the warm welcome he received in Belarus during his diplomatic mission. “During the recent meeting with the head of state we had a very warm and long conversation. Yesterday, we discussed in detail the issues of further development of inter-parliamentary relations with Speaker of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova. Belarus takes the development of relations with Uzbekistan very seriously. It is a great honor for me to be the first Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Belarus. Three years have passed really fast,” he said.

Diplomatic relations between Belarus and Uzbekistan were established on 21 January 1993. The legal framework of bilateral relations includes more than 70 agreements today.

In 2020, the trade between the two countries reached $280.1 million (17.1% up from 2019), including exports at $237.5 million (up 26%). Belarus' main exports last year were trucks, tractors and truck tractors, meat and meat products, sugar, dairy products, medicines, vaccines, and blood serums. Goods imported from Uzbekistan included cotton yarn, bed linen, rolled copper metal products, fresh vegetables, dried and fresh fruits. The two countries are implementing a number of joint projects in pharmaceuticals.
