MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – A panel discussion titled “Universality and Indivisibility of Human Rights for All: States Practices” was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva as part of the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The event was organized by the Belarusian and Russian permanent missions to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, BelTA has learned.

The participants of the side-event presented the second joint report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia on the human rights situation in individual states. The speakers were Irina Velichko, Head of the Directorate General for Multilateral Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, and Grigory Lukiyantsev, Director of the Department for Multilateral Human Rights Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

The discussion was moderated by the famous Swiss journalist, writer and public and political figure Guy Mettan. Several dozen representatives of diplomatic missions and non-governmental organizations also took part in the discussion.

The report focuses on human rights issues in developed democracies, drawing information from international organizations, independent international experts, UN Human Rights Council special procedures, national ombudsmen, human rights defenders, and media outlets. It aims to highlight human rights violations and concerns in these countries.

The participants of the discussion pointed to the deteriorating human rights situation in a number of Western countries, including systemic racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, violations of migrants' rights, suppression of media workers and public figures who disagree with the policies of Western governments. At the same time, double standards and interference in the internal affairs of sovereign countries under the pretext of defending human rights have become a new normal and continue to be an integral part of the foreign policy of the so-called human rights champions. Such actions undermine the fundamental principles of international law and destroy the system of cooperation in the field of human rights.

The report cites specific examples illustrating the attempts of the collective West and their allies to rewrite the history of World War II and misinterpret its results, whitewash war criminals and their accomplices.

In her speech Irina Velichko highlighted the situation on Belarus’ border with the European Union and the criminal actions of European countries against migrants and asylum seekers, resulting in numerous casualties. In this context, she noted that non-politicized cooperation is crucial for effectively addressing migration and other transnational challenges.

The panel discussion became another important element of collaborative efforts of Belarus, Russia, and like-minded nations to address selective approaches and double standards in international human rights matters, and to resume fair and equal cooperation in this field.
