Belarus reaffirms commitment to international arms control treaties

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – An annual meeting of the heads of verification centers of the OSCE member states is taking place in Vienna, Austria. Participants of the meeting are expected to discuss matters concerning the fulfillment of international treaties and agreements in the area of arms control in 2021. They will also discuss the main directions of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the sphere of verification in 2022, representatives of the Belarusian Defense Ministry told BelTA.

Chief of the Verification Office of the International Military Cooperation Department of the Belarusian Defense Ministry, Colonel Aleksandr Vengura made a statement during the meeting. He reaffirmed Belarus' commitment to observing international treaties and agreements in the area of arms control. He expressed regret in connection with the refusal of a number of countries to hold working meetings with representatives of Belarus in line with bilateral agreements on additional trust and security measures amid growing tensions in the region.

Apart from that, Aleksandr Vengura called for continued interaction of the defense ministries in arms control despite the evolving political and epidemic situation. He said it would fully meet interests of national security of all the countries as well as regional stability as a whole.
